The Birchland Banner

The Dream Walkers

by Kayla Maylor and Alex Coleman

I ran from everything behind me. My family  that  I  never  knew,  they  were  just  tall

figures  with  no  resemblance  to  me; they  had  no  physical  features  at  all.  I  ran  until  I  saw

the  looming  brick  wall  that  seem  to  have  no  end.  I  ran  to  my  right  hoping  that

somewhere  there  would  be an  end  to  this  nightmare,  but  as  I  continued  to  run  I  realize

that  the  wall  really  was  never  ending.

I  took  one  more  step  almost  ready  to  turn  back  around  but  then  I  saw  a  rope

twisted  into  the  deep  cracks  of  the  brick  wall.  I  started  to  run  towards  the  rope  in  order

to  take  my  only  visible  chance  of  escape.  I  stupidly  looked  back  and  saw  that  the

unrecognizable  figures  had  gotten  closer  and  were  picking  up  speed.  As  I  ran, they

continue  to  chase  after  me, their  arms  swinging  at  a much faster  speed  than  their  bodies

were  traveling.  I  pushed  myself  to  run  faster,  so  much  that  my  heart  felt  like  it  was

beating  out  of  my  chest  and  I  had  a  tightening  knot  in  my  throat  urging  me  to  breathe

more,  until  finally  I  reached  the  rope.

I  hauled  myself  up  and  struggled  to  climb  up.  Every  inch  farther  I  got  I  had  to

ignore  the  strong  urge  to  let  go  and  give  up.  As  I  got  to  the  middle  of  the  rope,  my

hands  were  bright  red  and  burning  but  I  knew  that  I  had  to  keep  going.

The  scary  black  shadows  started  frantically  clawing  at  me  in  a  desperate  attempt

to  get  me  down  from  the  rope  and  then,  to  my  horror,  they  got  a  firm  grip  around  my

ankles.  I  started  to  kick  my legs  blindly  trying  to  get  them  off  me  but  as  I  did  my  grip  on

the  rope  weakened  and  I  finally  let  go.

I  plummeted down towards the ground  waiting  for  the  creature’s  slinky  arms  to

wrap  around  me  and  do  as  they  wished,  but  that  time  never  came.  I  opened  my  eyes

and  I  saw  the  opposite  of  the  horrible  scene  from  before.  I  was  floating  downwards  but

instead  of  seeing  complete  darkness  from  before  the  blank  space  around  me  was  a  pure

white.  I  continued  to  fall  until  I  landed  on  the  ground.  I  winced  from  habit  but  I  was

surprised  when  I  land  on  my  feet  pain-free.

I  looked  down  at  myself  and  observed  that  I  was  no  longer  in  my  black  leather

jacket  and  dark  denim  jeans  from  before,  but  in  a  pretty  white  dress  that  rested  right

above  my  knees  with  lace  frills  towards  the  bottom.  It was something I would only dream

about. I was still barefooted though. Where was I?

I  cautiously  stepped  forward  and  every  step  was  echoed  by  the  tall  hard  walls.

An  elegant  mirror  appeared  in  front  of  me  and  for  split-‐second  I  saw  my  current  self

and  then  I  saw  a  more  mature  older  version  of  myself.  Through  the  mirror  I  saw  that  I

was  standing  in  front  of  a  large  expensive-looking  podium  speaking  but  I  could  not  hear

what  I  was  saying.  I  was  standing  in  front  of  a  large  crowd  who  were  watching  me  talk.

They all looked enthralled to what I was saying. There was a flash in the background and the only

thing that I could hear was a loud scream from the frantic looking crowd which I was speaking to.

Then everything immediately blacks out and all I could see was myself in the mirror.

But now my dress was all ripped and looked like I had just fallen down a forest hill. I cautiously put

my hand on the glass but my reflection does not. Instead it screamed and the mirror shattered

and fell to the ground slowly disappearing.
